Digby County, Nova Scotia

Digby County is among the most picturesque and historic regions of the province. It is a symphony of contrasts, dotted by small farms and large tracts of forest land in the interior, and miles of rugged shoreline, small fishing communities and historic homes and lighthouses along the coast. There are always Nova Scotia festivals and events to attend and the region has some of the best whale watching destinations in the world.

Weymouth North is about a 15 minute drive from the town of Digby, the largest community in the county. The MV Princess of Acadia provides an important ferry service between Digby and St. John, New Brunswick and is frequently used by U.S. visitors to Nova Scotia from the New England Sates. The ferry terminal is about 25 minutes from Weymouth North.

RealEstateNovaScotia.com is about a 5 minute drive from Weymouth, a village of rolling hills and restored Victorian homes near the mouth of the Sissiboo River. The river is a popular water route for kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts and organized tours of the area are available. Every summer from mid June to mid September, visitors can enjoy the famous Weymouth Historical Teas held at the former St. Thomas Anglican Church in the village.

An integral part of this region of Digby County is St. Mary's Bay - a large and picturesque body of water that separates the Digby Neck peninsula from the coastal mainland of the province. The bay is an important commercial fishing and recreational area. Shoreline properties along the bay have been purchased by U.S. and Upper Canadian residents for years, but a resurgence in popularity has occurred over the last decade, and more recently, following the terrorists’ threat in the United States.

Beyond St. Mary’s Bay is the much larger Bay of Fundy and Brier and Long Islands, popular whale watching and birding destinations in Atlantic Canada. A hike to the 'balancing rock' on Long Island is a day trip worth exploring.

A Special Event

This summer, the World Acadian Congress meets in Nova Scotia. Thousands of Acadians from around the world are expected to attend dozens of cultural events and family reunions throughout the province. The official opening of Congress, scheduled for July, 2004 will be held in Clare, just a few minutes drive from Weymouth North (and RealEstateNovaScotia.com).
